Housing Support for Youth Emancipated from Foster Care

Effective May 1, 2023, youth not participating in Fostering Futures at any point between the ages of 18 and 21 may be eligible for time-limited housing support. The housing support assistance is equal to the room and board portion of the maintenance payment for Fostering Futures. They may receive this support for a period of no more than six months (consecutive or non-consecutive) from the age of 18 until their 21st birthday.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • On or after July 1, 2022, you:
    • turned 18 while in foster care
    • turned 18 while in the custody of Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) but were in the custody of the local department of social services (LDSS) immediately prior to commitment
  • Are currently between the ages of 18 and 21
  • Are not currently participating in the Fostering Futures program

ASSISTANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Contact most recent former foster care worker to request assistance
  • Contact LDSS to complete a Housing Support Communication Form

HOUSING SUPPORT COMMUNICATION FORM

  • Indicate how many months of housing support you are requesting
  • Indicate designated payee, such as a landlord, to receive all or a portion of the payment

TERMINATION

Housing support payments can be terminated

  • With a request for termination
  • If you enter or reenter Fostering Futures
    • housing support payments may continue until the Voluntary Continuing Services and Support Agreement has been executed
  • If a forwarding address is not provided
  • If LDSS is unable to locate you after 60 days
  • When the maximum allotment of six months of housing support has been received
