Medical Coverage

New legislation has been passed regarding medical coverage for young adults formerly in foster care that now means youth in foster care under the age of 18 aren’t the only individuals eligible for medical coverage. If you were in foster care and received Medicaid in Virginia at the age of 18 (or older), and you are currently under the age of 26 (even if you “aged out” at 18 and had a lapse in medical coverage), you may be eligible for Medicaid or other medical coverage!

To learn more about your eligibility and the medical coverage options that might be available to you, feel free to check out coverva.org’s eligibility tool. There are various plans available and several ways to apply for medical coverage:

• Apply online at CommonHelp
• Call Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282 to apply via phone (Mon - Fri: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sat: 9 a.m. to noon)
• Paper applications can be picked up or mailed to you directly through your local department of social services *additional paperwork or applications may be required based on your locality
• Visit your local department of social services and request assistance to apply in-person

Regardless of which option you choose to apply for medical coverage, the following information will be helpful in completing the application:

• Your full legal name, social security number, and date of birth
• Most recent federal tax filing information (if available)
• Employment and income information for all members of your household for the current, or prior, month (i.e. recent paystubs or W-2’s)
• Policy numbers for any current health insurance policies

Managed Care Organization (MCO)

A Managed Care Organization (MCO) is a health insurance plan with a group of physicians and other providers who work collaboratively to deliver health care services to their members.
